Theory of Change
Purposeful Third Place’s –> Stronger Communities
We believe that change will require a cultural shift in how we value community, each other, and our roles as citizens. Thankfully, a movement to lead this change is already underway. The New American Tavern is designed to contribute to this movement by providing a third place for people and groups who share a desire to convene and connect.
Third places offer belonging, trust, and connection to community. They are owner operated. Regulars know each other and know the staff. By designing a third place for those interested in “stuff that matters,” we will deliver a venue that appeals as a food and beverage and events platform for a segment of our communities that few are catering to. The opportunity to eat, drink and host events in a space designed with this community in mind will draw in both individuals and groups. Through offerings and experience design we will activate the potential of our community and help develop trust, understanding, and reciprocity.
A vast array of sociological research indicates that our combination of hospitality, outreach, and programming has the potential to have unique and transformative impact. There are many organizations that focus on engaging the less engaged and the less connected. This is important work. We think our work fills a neglected area on the civic engagement ladder, both to more deeply engage those who are already active and to help those who are interested to deepen their levels involvement, wherever they start.
